Have you looked in your medicine cabinet lately?
Did you know that unwanted over-the-counter medications and prescription drugs contaminate waterways and potentially local drinking water when flushed, poured down the drain, or placed in the trash? Drugs in the home can be even more dangerous, as they can find their way into the hands of children or those suffering from substance use disorder. Prescription drug abuse is the fastest growing drug problem in the United States. On average, an American dies of a drug overdose every 5 minutes.
We want to be a part of the solution, which is why we now offer a new Consumer Drug Take-Back program to safely dispose of unused medications at the Yamhill Police Department/Yamhill City Hall.
In an effort to help reduce the risk of drugs in the home that can potentially harm children, teens, or adults, The Yamhill Police Department/Yamhill City Hall has set up a secure, safe drop-off location at Yamhill City Hall.
Unused medications in the home are a source of drug abuse in millions of homes, with the opioid crisis in the United States fueled in part by that availability: 47% of misused prescription pain relievers are given by, bought from or taken from a friend or relative. On average, an American dies of a drug overdose every 5 minutes.
“We want to provide our community with the safe, secure opportunity to clean out their medicine cabinets and make their homes and communities safer,” said Chief Greg Graven of the Yamhill Police Department. “We want to remind our community that they should not flush drugs down the toilet. Traces of drugs can appear in community drinking water. Our drug disposal unit, which is easily accessible in Yamhill City Hall, is a great answer to that problem and it’s simple to do. Just come in to Yamhill City Hall, for drop off in our big green receptacle and we will take it from there. Drugs can be dropped off with no questions asked.”
Chief Greg Graven said there are some things that can’t be taken in the receptacle, such as inhalers, needles, and pet medications, but staff will be on hand to help determine what to do. The collection receptacle will be available in Yamhill City Hall during business hours.
The Yamhill Police Department/Yamhill City Hall partnered with Inmar to manage this drug take-back program. Inmar has a long history as the industry leader in handling prescription and over-the-counter drug returns safely, securely, and discreetly for Police Departments, major and regional chain drug stores as well as independent pharmacies and hospitals across the United States.
